Dinamo București was founded on April 14, 1948, by the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, as the sports club of the Romanian Police. The club's first major trophy was the Romanian Cup in 1959, and the club's first league title came in 1962.

Dinamo București has been a regular competitor in European competitions, reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1984 and the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1986.
